The mission of the Expert-in-Residence Program at Shenandoah University is to enhance the academic excellence of the Shenandoah University School of Business through the practical experience of its team of highly experienced business executives. As a faculty, we believe students deserve a school that has built strong relationships with the business community and assists them in their transition into the business world.
J. Knox Singleton, the newly retired chief executive officer of Inova, has joined the school as its healthcare executive-in-residence.
On April 6, 2018, Singleton retired from his position at Inova, the Washington, D.C., region’s leading not-for-profit health care system that serves more than two million people annually.
Singleton joined Inova in 1983, taking it from a three-hospital, $500 million organization to a $3.5 billion health care system with five hospitals and more than 100 ambulatory service locations. Inova is considered a leader in genomics and personalized health, which uses an individual’s genetic makeup to predict and prevent disease.
Inova and Shenandoah have a relationship that spans more than 20 years, including Inova’s commitment to invest $5 million to support Shenandoah-led educational programs at the Inova Center for Personalized Health in Fairfax, Virginia, including programs in public health and nursing.
The School of Business, which has a variety of areas of study, offers an undergraduate program in health care management as well as a graduate certificate in health care management.
Singleton, who was named CEO of the year in 2015 by the Washington Business Journal, also gives back to communities locally and abroad, serving on a number of boards, and as the co-founder of both the Global Good Fund and the Community Coalition for Haiti, for which he is also a past president.
Singleton is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1970. He received a master’s degree in Health Administration from Duke University in 1973.
Businessman Dan Kaseman is bringing his industry knowledge to the Shenandoah University School of Business as its newest executive in residence.
The Shenandoah students are as bright and driven as any I have encountered. It’s an honor to work in this high-energy environment. I hope I can give them some real-world experience and help them build confidence.”
